Monica Canalis

Monica Canalis is a regional councillor for the Democratic Party in Piedmont. In her institutional role she has closely followed matters concerning the Pinerolo-Turin-Chivasso rail service, known as SFM2, repeatedly flagging the service disruptions affecting commuters in the Turin metropolitan area and the Pinerolo area.[1][2]

The fight over disruptions on the SFM2 line

In early October 2026 a fault in the traffic-control systems on the stretch between None and Candiolo caused train cancellations and severe delays along the Pinerolo-Turin-Chivasso line, worsening a situation of difficulty that had already been flagged earlier, with faults in the Settimo area and anomalies in the train-spacing systems around Candiolo.[1]

Canalis spoke out publicly on the matter, calling the Pinerolo-Turin line Italy's "worst performer" for service disruptions, recalling that after the line reopened at the end of July 2026, following months of closure, commuters had expected improved service, while cancellations and delays continued.[2]

The councillor noted that the line has undergone a series of works linked to the adoption of the Ertms traffic management, protection and control system, which is not due to come into operation before 2029. Works planned for summer 2026 included the renewal of the train-spacing system, the replacement of the remote control at Airasca, the replacement of the control boxes at almost all level crossings, and the design of an underpass or overpass over the tracks at Candiolo to allow simultaneous train movements. According to Canalis, these works have not yet had an effect on the service's efficiency.[2]

Request for penalties and proposals for Porta Susa

Canalis filed a request for access to documents held by Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (Rfi) and Piedmont's Mobility Agency, to obtain a detailed picture of the delays and cancellations recorded on the line. On the basis of this data, she announced her intention to ask the regional transport councillor Marco Gabusi to proceed without further delay to apply the penalties set out for the disruptions.[2]

Ahead of the changes planned for Porta Susa station starting in 2027, when the hub will also host the SFM5 line towards Orbassano and the SFM8 line towards Chivasso, with the completion of the link between Porta Susa and Porta Nuova expected by 2028, Canalis proposed considering, on a transitional basis, a rethink of the Pinerolo-Turin line, suggesting that trains from Pinerolo could terminate at Porta Nuova via the Lingotto interchange station, as a possible way to ease pressure on Porta Susa.[2]
