Candiolo
Candiolo is a municipality in the Metropolitan City of Turin, led by mayor Chiara Lamberto. It has been twinned for many years with the municipality of Santa Cruz, in the Republic of Cape Verde, about 3,342 kilometres away.[1]
The twinning with Santa Cruz and the water projects
The bond between the two communities arose on the initiative of the late Pierre Monkam and, through a first project, brought running water to the village of Ponta Salto, in Santa Cruz, for around sixty families who until then had to carry it by hand from wells, walking two or three hours each way.[1]
A second project, funded by the Piedmont Region under the «Piemonte ed Africa sub-sahariana» (Piedmont and Sub-Saharan Africa) call for proposals and promoted together with the Fondazione Compagnia di San Paolo, extends the water network to the communities of Boca Larga and Mathino. On 2 and 3 October 2026 a delegation from Santa Cruz, led by mayor Carlos Alberto Gonzales Silva, the director for Economic and Local Development José Alves Mendes and the councillor for Water Resources Mendes Moreira Coelho Joao David, met in Candiolo with local authorities, residents and the Candiolo Irrigation Consortium.[1]
Local news
On the evening of 26 September 2026 a fire destroyed a car parked in via Matteotti, in Candiolo; the fire brigade intervened, and the flames did not spread to other vehicles, with no injuries.[2]
