Pinerolo-Turin (railway line)

The Pinerolo-Turin is a railway line in Piedmont connecting Pinerolo to Turin, used by the SFM2 Pinerolo-Torino-Chivasso metropolitan railway service. The line serves the Turin metropolitan area and the Pinerolese, with a commuter base largely made up of students and workers heading to the provincial capital.

Problems and disruptions

The line has for years been flagged as one of the most problematic in Italy for the frequency of delays and cancelled trains [1][2]. On 1 October 2026, a fault in the signalling systems on the stretch between None and Candiolo caused the cancellation of several trains and lengthy delays during rush hour, causing disruption for hundreds of students and workers [1]. The incident was part of a series of previously recorded problems on the same infrastructure, including faults in the Settimo area and anomalies in the train-spacing systems in the Candiolo area [1]. Passengers and local committees have called on Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (Rfi) and Trenitalia to carry out structural interventions and improve maintenance of the facilities [1].

Upgrading works

The line was closed for works that ended in late July 2026, also aimed at adopting the Ertms system for managing, protecting and controlling rail traffic, which is not expected to come into operation before 2029 [2]. Among the works planned for summer 2026 were the renewal of the train-spacing system, the replacement of the remote control unit at Airasca, the replacement of the control boxes at almost all level crossings, and the design of an underpass or overpass across the tracks at Candiolo to allow simultaneous movements, according to an account given by Democratic Party regional councillor Monica Canalis [2]. According to Canalis, these interventions have so far had no impact on the efficiency of the service [2].

Political demands and outlook

Canalis has filed a request for access to documents with Rfi and the Piedmont Mobility Agency to obtain a full picture of delays and cancellations, with the aim of asking the regional transport councillor Marco Gabusi to apply penalties [2]. The councillor has also proposed, in light of the works planned at Porta Susa from 2027 for the arrival of the SFM5 line toward Orbassano and the SFM8 line toward Chivasso, that consideration be given, on a transitional basis, to terminating trains coming from Pinerolo at Porta Nuova, via the Lingotto interchange station, rather than at Porta Susa [2].
