Gates for the night-time closure of Pinerolo railway station
News of

The project for the night-time closure of Pinerolo railway station, in the Province of Turin, involves installing fences and gates to prevent access to the facility during night-time hours. The works, now at an advanced stage, remain on hold because of a problem linked to some housing units inside the railway complex [1].
The works
The project was launched in previous months with the aim of preventing access to the station at night. As early as August the first works had been carried out, with fences installed on the arches leading to the platforms. In the following days some gates were also installed, intended to regulate entrances and mark out the station's spaces. However, the closure of the main entrance from piazza Garibaldi is still missing [1].
The housing problem
Inside a building that once belonged to the state railway company and is included in the station complex, there are some flats managed by a Turin-based association, currently home to several women. These residents must be able to continue entering and leaving the building even once the station is closed to the public, which raises questions about the management of the gate keys, guaranteed access for the residents, and who will be responsible for opening and closing the gates on a daily basis [1].
The current situation
The decision on managing access has passed to the Municipality of Pinerolo, which must find an organisational solution and clarify who will be in charge of the gates in practice. In the meantime the station continues to be accessible during night-time hours too, and the actual closure can only happen once the issues relating to the main entrance and the daily management of the gates have been resolved. No final date has been given for the new system coming into operation [1].
