The first Turin domains
For every domain, the .it registry keeps the actual registration date, but only from 29 January 1996, the day Registro.it launched its own database: everything registered earlier carries this same date as a limit. Of the first generation of Turin domains, then, it is known only that they are "older than 29 January 1996"; their internal order has to be reconstructed from archives and the press of the time. It includes sixteen names: comune.torino.it, provincia.torino.it, polito.it, unito.it, csi.it, lastampa.it, fiat.it, olivetti.it, juventus.it, seat.it, telecomitalia.it, italdesign.it, invicta.it, alpcom.it, arpnet.it and inrete.it.1
Right after the 29 January 1996 barrier come, in order of registration, the domains of Martini (21 February), Ferrero (4 March), Pininfarina (6 March), Superga (22 April), Sparco (17 May) and Pagine Gialle (29 July), followed in 1997 by Sisvel (6 February), Cselt (18 March), Lavazza (17 April), Lancia (14 May), Caffarel (26 May), Alfa Romeo (1 August), Tuttocittà (26 August) and Cinzano (22 October).1 Italy's very first domain, cnuce.cnr.it, dates instead to 23 December 1987, more than eight years before the Turin barrier.2
