Cinzano
Cinzano is the vermouth and sparkling wine brand born in Turin in the eighteenth century from the shop of the Cinzano family in via Dora Grossa, today's via Garibaldi; since 2025 it has belonged to the Caffo 1915 group.[1][2][9]
The shop in Dora Grossa
The family, originally from the hills of Pecetto, obtained a ducal distilling licence in 1707; in 1757 the brothers Giovanni Giacomo and Carlo Stefano Cinzano were admitted to the Università dei confettieri e degli acquavitari of Turin, and Carlo Stefano set up the business in via Dora Grossa.[1][2] By 1810 Francesco Cinzano was the sole owner of the shop; the firm produced "vermouth and rosoli" and was awarded prizes at the Florence and London exhibitions of 1861-1862.[1]
Santa Vittoria d'Alba
In 1867 the firm leased the Santa Vittoria d'Alba estate, with a processing plant, from the Royal House, and in 1893 it bought the entire complex, which remains today an important wine-making centre in the valley floor of the Cinzano hamlet.[1][3] In 1895 son-in-law Alberto Marone joined the company, serving as owner from 1903 to 1933; by 1908 vermouth accounted for 65% of foreign sales, and in 1921 the firm became a joint-stock company, with strong exports to Argentina and Latin America.[1][4]
Twentieth-century advertising was entrusted to Leonetto Cappiello, Adolf Hohenstein, Raymond Savignac and Nico Edel; for the brand's 260th anniversary, in 2017, the Museo del Risorgimento exhibited twenty-six restored posters, centred on Cappiello's 1920 "Woman Reclining on Grape Clusters".[2][4] The historical archive holds 40,000 files.[4] In 1973 a company within the group bought the Ristorante del Cambio, which it restored.[5]
From Campari to Caffo
Cinzano was acquired by Campari in 1999; on 26 June 2025 Campari sold the Cinzano and Frattina brands to the Caffo 1915 group, maker of Vecchio Amaro del Capo, for 100 million euros, while retaining the plants in Italy and Argentina.[6][7] In 2024 the two brands had generated revenues of 75 million euros.[8] The sale was completed on 31 October 2025, and the new owner aims to relaunch the Turin vermouth and sparkling wines starting in 2026.[9]
