Ospedale Maggiore della Carità di Novara

The Ospedale Maggiore della Carità di Novara probably originated in the first half of the 11th century in the Sant'Agabio district as the Casa di San Michele della Carità, run by the Umiliati order for the poor, disabled elderly and pilgrims; by the end of the 13th century it had turned to treating the sick, and in 1482 a bull of Pope Sixtus IV merged it with seven other hospitals in the city[1]. In the 17th century the institution moved to its current site, designed by the architect Soliva and opened in 1643; in the mid-19th century Alessandro Antonelli, the architect of the Mole in Torino, designed its extension, the large L-shaped building that became the hospital's symbol[1].

Since December 2007 it has held the status of a university hospital and hosts teaching for the faculty of Medicine and Surgery of the Università del Piemonte Orientale «Amedeo Avogadro»[2]. It is the reference hospital for the north-eastern quadrant of Piedmont, has a level-two emergency department and leads the oncology network for the provinces of Novara, Vercelli and Verbano-Cusio-Ossola[2][3]. Its legal seat is at corso Mazzini 18 in Novara, with a second site in Galliate[4].

The site maggioreosp.novara.it presents the departments of all its locations and gathers public-facing services: appointment booking, retrieval of test results and clinical records, payment of the ticket fee, the blood-sampling centre, outpatient clinics and job postings in the «Lavora con noi» section[4]. In the Torino Top 100 ranking for September 2026, the site ranks among the 50,000 most-visited sites in Italy according to Google's Chrome UX Report.
