The rebirth of Caffè Platti
The relaunch of the café, opened in 1875 on corso Vittorio Emanuele II, was led by Roberto Balma, president of the multinational group FNA Compressors, together with his wife Laura Santinelli Balma, co-founder of the group's luxury division Villa Cimena Luxury Events, which not only took over the café's management but also bought the building itself. The managing director of the operating company is Federico Arrichiello, heading a staff of ninety permanent employees and two hundred and fifty collaborators, in a structure aiming to serve ninety thousand covers and more than a thousand events a year.
The restoration, completed in twenty days, took a conservative approach on the ground floor, recovering the original furnishings, counters and frescoes, while the mezzanine was redesigned in a Savoy style to host events, lunches and private dinners. Since 1875 the café's tables have seated, among others, the statesmen Giovanni Giolitti and Luigi Einaudi, the entrepreneurs Luigi Lavazza and Giovanni Agnelli, the intellectuals Cesare Pavese and Norberto Bobbio, and authors from the Einaudi publishing house.
