Turin-Ceres railway
The 52-kilometre line connecting Turin to Caselle airport and the Lanzo Valleys, reopened as far as Ceres in September 2026.

The Turin-Ceres railway, fifty-two kilometres long, connects the regional capital with Turin-Caselle airport and the Lanzo Valleys.[1]
From the handover to RFI to the reopening
The final stretch between Germagnano and Ceres, twelve kilometres long, was suspended on 12 June 2023 as part of the process of bringing the line into the national rail network: from 1 January 2024 the infrastructure became part of the Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI) network, and on 20 January of the same year the new connection with Turin’s rail link (passante ferroviario) came into service, allowing trains to connect the city directly with Caselle and the valleys. The infrastructure and technology works on the line are worth eighty million euros, funded by the PNRR.[1]
The 2026 reopening
The reopening of the final stretch was presented on Saturday 12 September 2026 in Germagnano, in the presence of the Piedmont Region’s transport councillor Marco Gabusi, the regional heritage councillor Gian Luca Vignale, and representatives of Rete Ferroviaria Italiana and Trenitalia; service resumed on Sunday 13 September, after more than three years of suspension.[1]
The service
Between Germagnano and Ceres there are eight daily connections, four in each direction, including Saturdays and Sundays, with stops at Funghera, Traves, Losa, Pessinetto and Mezzenile. From Germagnano departures are at 5:59, 7:53, 16:53 and 19:53; from Ceres at 6:36, 8:36, 17:36 and 20:35.[1][2] For the valley the line means jobs, schooling, services and tourism, and it reduces dependence on cars.[2]
From the regional project to undergrounding: 1980-1995
In March 1980, when the line passed to regional management, councillor Bajardi presented a proposal to modernise the Turin-Ceres railway, with works worth 49 billion lire also extended to the Canavesana line.1
In May 1987 renovation works began on the line: within two years the first stretch was to pass underground beneath Madonna di Campagna, with a link connecting Caselle airport to Porta Susa and to Lingotto.2
In October 1995 the Commission for the Caselle railway issue issued an ultimatum demanding that the line be put underground, threatening to boycott the ballot box at the next general election if its demands were not heard.3
