Suicide of an inmate at Ivrea prison (September 2026)
On the night of 21 September 2026, a 42-year-old inmate committed suicide in the prison of Ivrea, hanging himself with a makeshift noose in the cell he shared with another inmate. According to the Osapp, the prison police union, this was the seventh suicide of the year in Piedmontese penitentiary institutions, following two cases in Biella and Verbania; the Osapp's secretary general, Leo Beneduci, linked the sequence to a 30% reduction in prison police staff.
The regional ombudsperson for detainees, Monica Formaiano, described the close succession of suicides as «yet another alarm bell that can no longer be ignored» and called for an immediate response on prevention efforts and on the overall situation of Piedmontese penitentiary institutions, urging investment in mental health services and psychological support for the most vulnerable inmates.
