Monica Formaiano
Monica Formaiano is the Regional Ombudsperson for Detainees' Rights of Piedmont. After the suicide of a 42-year-old inmate in the prison of Ivrea on 21 September 2026, she stated that «this close succession of suicides is yet another alarm bell that can no longer be ignored, because behind every death there is a person with their own suffering, their own history, and a collective responsibility».
Formaiano called for «an immediate response on the prevention front and on the overall situation of Piedmont's penitentiary institutions», urging investment in prison health services, particularly in mental health and psychological support, and in the development of individual care pathways for the most fragile and vulnerable detainees.
