Nizza Millefonti

Nizza Millefonti is a district of Turin south of the city centre, bounded by corso Bramante to the north, piazza Bengasi to the south, the railway to the west and the Po to the east; it is part of Circoscrizione 8, together with San Salvario, Cavoretto, Borgo Po, Lingotto and Filadelfia.[1][2]

History

Via Nizza was crossed by two customs boundaries, in 1853 and 1912, with gates where piazza Carducci and piazza Bengasi now stand; along this axis grew the hamlets of Tetti Frè and Millefonti, whose name recalls the springs found in the area.[1] The railway to Genoa, built in 1846-1848, split the area in two, and between the 19th and 20th centuries via Nizza turned from an agricultural axis into a working-class district: this is still reflected in FIAT's Lingotto plant, built in 1916-1922, and in the RIV and Carpano factories.[1]

Italia '61 and later transformations

After the ponds downstream of via Genova were reclaimed, the Italia '61 complex was built there, partly renovated for the 2006 Olympics; the National Automobile Museum reopened after renovation in 2011.[1] The Lingotto plant closed in 1982, and since the 1990s many industrial buildings have been converted, including the 8 Gallery shopping centre, Eataly and the Olympic Village.[1]

Today

In September 2026 the neighbourhood house «Barrito», in via Tepice, reopened after renovation work.[3] From 21 September to 22 November 2026 the Giubileo Incontri space on corso Bramante is hosting the exhibition «Bentornata, Italia '61!».[4]
