Asti's ASL AT (local health authority) establishes two new Simple Departmental Structures (SSD) dedicated to coordinating local healthcare: the Asti North District Area and the Asti South District Area. The first is entrusted to Dr Laura Bonifazio, the second to Dr Filippo Bo [1].

Aims and organisation

The two structures are tasked with organising health services according to the health needs of their respective areas and with strengthening the integration of healthcare and social services. They work closely with the Department of Community Care, to which they report, and with the Asti Centro District Complex Structure, both led by Dr Elena Tamietti [1].

The SSDs' tasks include managing operational sites, including hygiene and safety aspects, and monitoring care pathways. A key focus is health and social care integration: the Asti North Area works in coordination with Co.Ge.Sa., while the Asti South Area liaises with C.I.S.A. Asti Sud, particularly through Multidimensional Assessment Units (UVM) and Single Access Points (PUA). The two structures also coordinate with the municipalities, accredited private facilities, the third sector and volunteer organisations, as well as cooperating with Local Administrative Services on spending control and with the Prevention Department on public health protection [1].

The heads of the new structures

Filippo Bo, born in Asti, 60, holds a degree in Medicine and Surgery and specialisations in Experimental Surgery and Microsurgery and in Health Statistics, with a focus on health and social care planning. He has worked at the hospitals of Manerbio, Vercelli and Asti and at ASL 3 Genovese, working on health promotion, screening organisation, prosthetic care and the Nizza Monferrato local healthcare office. Alongside his work for the health authority, he holds a contract teaching position at the University of Turin and the University of Eastern Piedmont, in the areas of management and organisation of local health services [1].

Laura Bonifazio, born in Albenga, 51, holds a degree in Medicine and Surgery and a specialisation in General Surgery. She has worked in the Severe Burns and Plastic Surgery Complex Structure at ASL 3 Genovese, caring for patients in sub-intensive care and plastic surgery, and has taught courses for emergency service doctors on the treatment of severe burns. Within the ASL AT district she has worked on continuity of care between hospitals and local services, as well as on the Multidimensional Disability Assessment Unit (UMVD) [1].
