Piedmont's regional plan for university housing: 6,771 new beds by 2027
News of
In October 2026, in the Piedmont Regional Council, PD councillor Gianna Pentenero raised a question on the resources needed to close the gap between the university beds available and European standards: according to the questioner, Piedmont still lacks 15,138 university housing places.[1][2] Pentenero noted that the PNRR (Italy's National Recovery and Resilience Plan) had funded 60,000 beds nationwide by 2026, but that about 70% of the places needed to close Italy's gap with the rest of Europe are still missing, against a backdrop of constantly rising private rents and a shortage of public places.[1][2]
The Region's response
Councillor Gian Luca Vignale noted that over the past five years the number of places managed by EDISU Piemonte had nearly doubled, rising from 1,637 in the 2021/22 academic year to 3,167 in 2026/27, an increase of about 93%.[1][2]
Vignale described five new university halls of residence, winners of ministerial calls from 2016 and 2021, to be built in Turin, Grugliasco, Novara and Savigliano for 757 students, with a total investment of €93 million.[1][2] Under the Ministry of University and Research's university housing plan, Piedmont is due to get 6,771 new beds by 2027, of which 2,940 have already been completed.[1][2]
