Edisu announcement on student housing places for 2026/2027
Date of the event:
On 9 October 2026 Edisu Piemonte, the regional agency for the right to university education, announced in a statement 3,167 available places in student housing for the 2026/2027 academic year. The figure marks an increase of 423 places compared with the previous year and is almost double the 1,637 places available in the 2021/2022 academic year. Of the 3,167 places, 2,706 are in the Turin area and 461 in the rest of Piedmont. The announcement comes in response to protests by university collectives over housing held in the preceding days.[1][2]
Context and figures
According to Edisu, the increase in available housing was also made possible by measures funded under the PNRR (National Recovery and Resilience Plan). The agency said it had met with students seeking clarification on allocations, reviewing the reported cases individually: the anomalies found amounted to 96 out of a total of 3,167 recipients, and according to the agency most were resolved the day before the announcement through new allocations.[1][2]
The president's statements
Edisu Piemonte president Roberta Piano said that five years earlier there were 1,637 available places and that the number has since doubled, following a trend of steady growth that has allowed the housing offer to be increased at all of Piedmont's university campuses. Piano also announced that in the coming years five new residences will be built, adding more than 800 further places across the region.[1][2]
Piano explained that the expansion and diversification of the housing offer made it necessary to update the allocation criteria, with the aim of fostering greater balance in the make-up of residential communities and their integration. She finally stressed that listening to student representatives is a distinctive feature of the agency, guaranteed both in institutional settings, such as the board of directors, and in any other forum suited to addressing and resolving issues.[1][2]

A Democratic Party question and a 93-million-euro plan for five new residences (October 2026)
In the Regional Council, responding to a question from the Democratic Party, first signed by Gianna Pentenero, on the resources needed to build the 15,138 university housing places still missing compared with European standards, councillor Gian Luca Vignale announces the construction of five new university residences, winners of calls for tender linked to the 2016 and 2021 ministerial decrees, spread across Turin, Grugliasco, Novara and Savigliano, for 757 students in total and an investment of 93 million euros. Thanks to the Ministry of University's Housing Plan, Piedmont is set to gain 6,771 new housing places by 2027, of which 2,940 have already been built.
