Istituto Nazionale Oncologico di Candiolo

The Istituto Nazionale Oncologico di Candiolo, also known as the Candiolo Institute, is a cancer research and treatment institute in the municipality of Candiolo, in the Turin metropolitan area. In September 2026 a work by the artist Mario Merz was placed in front of the institute, brought there by the Fondazione Allegra Agnelli together with the Fondazione Merz.

The work is Mario Merz’s «Doppio Igloo di Porto» (Double Igloo of Porto), featuring the Fibonacci sequence, installed permanently in front of the entrance for the fortieth anniversary of the Fondazione Allegra Agnelli per la Ricerca sul Cancro (Allegra Agnelli Foundation for Cancer Research). [4]

On 24 September 2026 President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella visited the institute, meeting researchers, doctors and patients and inaugurating a new CT scanner; he was welcomed by the Foundation’s president, Allegra Agnelli, and the institute’s president, Andrea Agnelli. [5]

For the fortieth anniversary of the Fondazione Allegra Agnelli per la Ricerca sul Cancro, on 18 September 2026 a permanent installation by the Arte Povera artist Mario Merz was unveiled at the entrance of the Institute, at viale della Ricerca 7 in Candiolo: the «Doppio Igloo di Porto» (1998), two sixteen-segment steel structures nested one inside the other, topped by a neon deer and the number 10946 from the Fibonacci sequence.[1][2] The work, originally created for the Fundação de Serralves in Porto and previously exhibited at the Hangar Bicocca, Villa Borghese and the Milan Triennale among other venues, was brought to Candiolo by the Fondazione Allegra Agnelli together with the Fondazione Merz: according to the two foundations, it is a unique case worldwide of a contemporary artwork permanently installed in a cancer hospital.[2][3] The project was carried out with the support of Gruppo Building and the collaboration of Intesa Sanpaolo and Gallerie d’Italia; a catalogue published by Allemandi was presented at Artissima 2026.[2]
