Giuseppe Verdi Conservatory of Turin

The Giuseppe Verdi Conservatory is Turin's institute of advanced musical education, located in Piazza Bodoni; founded in 1866 as the City's Musical Institute, it was inaugurated as a conservatory on 13 February 1936.[1][2]

The building

The eclectic, neo-mannerist building dates from 1928 and stands on the site of the former fish market; MuseoTorino attributes it to the architect Giovanni Battista Ricci, working within the City's Technical Office.[2] The organ in the hall was inaugurated on 10 May 1933.[1]

The concert hall

From 1945 to 1952 the hall hosted the concerts of the Rai orchestra and choir; after a fire in 1984 it was closed and the building was renovated in 1986.[1] The hall has 680 seats between stalls and gallery, was renovated in 2006, and hosts the seasons of the Unione Musicale, the Filarmonica di Torino, and the MITO festival.[3][1]

Today

In June 2026 Massimo Data, a bassoon professor, was elected director for the 2026-2029 term, succeeding Francesco Pennarola, who had led the conservatory since 2020.[4][5] The conservatory is set to become part of the future Polo delle Arti in the Cavallerizza Reale, together with the Accademia Albertina.[6]
