Piazza Bodoni
Piazza Bodoni is a square in the center of Turin, in the Borgo Nuovo district, overlooked by the Giuseppe Verdi Conservatory.[1]
The monument to La Marmora
At its center stands the equestrian monument to General Alfonso Ferrero della Marmora, by Stanislao Grimaldi, created between 1881 and 1891 and unveiled in 1891.[2]
The Conservatory
The Conservatory building was built in 1928 to a design by Giovanni Ricci, on the site of the former fish market; its concert hall hosted the Rai orchestra and choir's concerts from 1945 to 1952.[1] The Boasso houses on the square are by Camillo Riccio.[3]
The plaques
At number 4, a plaque from 1883 commemorates the publisher Giuseppe Pomba, founder of UTET.[4] At number 3, another commemorates the partisan Riccardo Banderali, arrested in the square on April 10, 1945 after a gun battle and shot the same day, awarded the gold medal for military valor; restored in 2011.[5]
The pedestrian square
Long used mainly as a parking lot, the square was redeveloped and reopened on June 13, 2002, after about a year of works: Luserna stone in the central circle, reclaimed porphyry from Piazza Castello, and new lighting for the monument and the Conservatory; the underground car park remained.[6]
