MuseoTorino
Virtual and distributed museum of the City of Turin dedicated to the city's history and places, launched online on 17 March 2011.
MuseoTorino is the museum of the City of Turin dedicated to the city itself: a distributed museum, both virtual and physical, in which the collection consists of the contemporary city with its places, and whose stated purpose is to preserve, grow, document and communicate knowledge of Turin [1]. It is promoted by the City of Turin through its Department of Culture and Museums Directorate, in collaboration with local bodies, universities, museums, research institutes and cultural associations [1] [2].
The museum was opened on 17 March 2011, on the day of the celebrations for the 150th anniversary of Italian Unification, with an initial core of over two thousand entries on places [1]. Alongside the catalogue, it offers the permanent exhibition «Torino: storia di una città» ("Turin: history of a city"), thematic exhibitions such as «Il Risorgimento è qui!» ("The Risorgimento is here!"), a library, an archive, a media library, the MuseoTorino magazine, and documentary collections such as the Collezione Simeom [1] [2]. The project describes itself as a museum "for everyone, but belonging to everyone" and invites citizens to contribute knowledge, memories and proposals [1].
The site is built for the data web: entries use RDFa and Open Graph and are accessible to other systems through an API interface in the form of linked open data [1] [2]. The entries reconstruct the history of individual places and institutions, from the Officine Grandi Riparazioni to the Museo Nazionale del Risorgimento Italiano, with timelines ranging from construction to recent restorations [3] [4]. In the Torino Top 100 ranking for September 2026, the site is among the 50,000 most visited sites in Italy according to Google's Chrome UX Report.
