Giaveno

Giaveno is a municipality in the Metropolitan City of Turin, located in Val Sangone. The town is particularly tied to the tradition of the porcini mushroom (Boletus edulis), whose fame dates back to 1628, when the product was already appreciated at the Savoy court [1].

Places and institutions

In Giaveno's historic centre stands the Museo Alessandri, which opens on special occasions during the town's events dedicated to the mushroom [2]. At Via Pacchiotti 51 is the Istituto Pacchiotti, a building used as the venue for the so-called PalaFungo during the autumn event dedicated to the porcino [1].

Fungo in Festa and the Fiera del Fungo Porcino

From 1 to 11 October, Giaveno hosts every year the Fungo in Festa event, a calendar of events born from the collaboration between the City of Giaveno and the Pro Loco Giaveno TO APS, under the patronage of the Metropolitan City of Turin [1][2]. The highlight is the Fiera del Fungo Porcino, held on the second Sunday of October in the historic centre, with tasting stands, a mushroom market, awards for the best local foragers (known as "boulajour", experts from Val Sangone), a mycological exhibition, music and cultural and artistic initiatives such as the Memorial Andrea Bes en plein air painting competition [2].

In 2026 the event reached its 45th edition, obtaining for the first time the status of a Fair of National relevance [1][2]. The recognition was commented on by the regional councillor for Commerce, Agriculture and Food, Tourism, Sport and Post-Olympic Affairs, Parks, Paolo Bongioanni, who pointed to the Piedmont Region's intention to invest in reward mechanisms for events that promote identity-defining agri-food products [1]. The mayor of Giaveno, Stefano Olocco, described the awarding of the national status as a recognition of the event's 45-year history and of the bond between the town, its woods and the area's most prized product [1]. The president of the Pro Loco Giaveno, Andrea Versino, described the result as the fruit of 45 years of the festival's history [1].

Programme and related initiatives

During the 2026 edition of Fungo in Festa, alongside the porcini mushroom fair, the Autumn Trade Fair and the AgriME Fair were held in Piazza Operatori di Pace, with stands of agricultural machinery, vintage tractors and excavators, as well as networking opportunities for operators in the agricultural supply chain [2]. The programme also included a talk on climate change and its impact on the mountain ecosystem and on mushroom growth, a treasure hunt in the historic centre in collaboration with Giaveno's Commercial District, and a show cooking event dedicated to the local porcino [1][2].
