Delay in reopening the Chivasso–Ivrea–Aosta railway (October 2026)
On 2 October 2026 the Chivasso–Ivrea–Aosta Railway Users' Association, meeting in Ivrea, reviewed the line's electrification works, reporting that Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI) had announced that service would resume only on the Ivrea–Pont Saint Martin section from January 2027, while there is no firm timeline for reopening as far as Aosta.[1]
Comparison with the Chivasso–Ivrea electrification
The association recalled that the electrification of the Chivasso–Ivrea section was completed in under two years, between late 2004 and mid-2006, with electric trains entering service from the December 2006 timetable change without the line ever being closed to traffic. According to the association, the different terrain of the Aosta Valley compared with the Canavese plain makes the upgrade works involve difficulties, costs and timelines that are not comparable.[1]
The proposal for selective double-tracking
For the section north of Ivrea, the association proposes concentrating work in the Canavese area, with selective double-tracking between Hône/Bard and Verrès and between Quart and Aosta.[1]
