Consorzio del Porro di Cervere
The Consortium for the Protection of the Porro di Cervere (Consorzio per la tutela del Porro di Cervere) is the organisation bringing together growers of the Porro Cervere, a leek variety typical of the Piedmontese municipality of Cervere, in the Province of Cuneo. The Consortium promotes the cultivation, traceability and marketing of the product, and is among the organisers of the Fiera del Porro di Cervere, held every year in November in the municipality [1][2].
History
The Consortium was founded in November 1996 on the initiative of 21 producers, with the participation of the then mayor of Cervere, Giorgio Maria Bergesio, who has served as its president since its founding [2]. In 2026 the organisation marks thirty years of activity, coinciding with the 47th edition of the Fiera del Porro, held in Cervere from 7 to 22 November [1][2].
According to president Bergesio, in the 1990s leeks were sold at markets for about 1,000 lire a bunch, roughly 0.52 euros; in 2026 the price paid to producers is 8 euros a kilo. The Consortium has introduced a traceability and labelling system along the entire supply chain, through to retail sale [2].
Structure and production
In 2026 the Consortium has 35 producer members, alongside the municipality of Cervere and the Province of Cuneo as institutional members. The area under cultivation for the Porro Cervere is about 20 hectares, with average seasonal output of around 2,000 quintals. In the same year, about 34,000 kilograms of leeks were sold through large-scale retail [2].
Activities and initiatives
The Consortium supports the educational initiative "Il Porro Cervere va a scuola!" ("The Porro Cervere goes to school!"), which reached its third edition in 2026 and for the first time involves, in addition to primary schools, also middle schools, for a total of about 160 participating pupils [2].
To mark its thirtieth anniversary, on 22 November 2026 the Consortium is organising a conference reviewing its history and discussing the sector's future prospects [2].
