Vigone

Vigone is a municipality in the Metropolitan City of Turin. Its territory is crossed by the Pellice stream, which marks the boundary with the municipality of Villafranca Piemonte; the two towns are linked by a bridge along Provincial Road 139, which also has a cycle path ^[1][2].

The bridge over the Pellice

The bridge over the Pellice between Villafranca Piemonte and Vigone is the subject of an extraordinary maintenance and structural upgrade project, funded by the Ministry of Infrastructure under the programme for making bridges safe in the Po river basin ^[1][2]. The overall cost of the works comes to 2,800,000 euros ^[1][2].

The 2026 works

On 13 October 2026 the Metropolitan City of Turin announced the completion of the first phase of works, covering the downstream side of the deck. A new traffic layout was then put in place, shifting traffic onto the upgraded lane and reopening the stretch of cycle path crossing the bridge ^[1][2].

The change to traffic flow allows the second phase of works to start, on the upstream side of the bridge, which involves installing internal structural tie rods to improve the structure's stability, building a new load-distribution slab and completing the side safety barrier ^[1][2].

Thanks to further funds from the ministerial grant, amounting to 170,000 euros, a contract variation has also been arranged to improve site safety and complete the structure's protection works. This includes in particular extending the work on the bed of the Pellice, laying large rip-rap boulders between the bridge's piers, in order to restore the riverbed levels to what they were before the erosion that affected the foundations and to reduce the risk of further scouring ^[1][2].

For the whole duration of the second phase of works, the alternating one-way system regulated by site signage and the speed restrictions at the bridge remain in force ^[1][2].
