Smash-and-grab at a restaurant on Via Cavour
The smash-and-grab at a restaurant on Via Cavour was an aggravated theft that took place in Turin's city centre, ending with the arrest, caught in the act, of a 35-year-old man by the State Police. The episode occurred in the early hours of the night, when the Operations Centre issued a report concerning a "smash-and-grab" break-in at a restaurant on Via Cavour.[1][2]
How the theft unfolded
A man smashed the shop window of the establishment using a manhole cover and entered the premises, then fled in the direction of Via San Francesco da Paola, taking the cash register with him.[1][2]
Police response and arrest
The patrol car of the General Prevention and Public Assistance Office, which responded immediately to the area, organised a search along the possible escape routes. Officers shortly afterwards spotted, on Accademia Albertina, a man matching the description they had received as he was climbing over a low wall in the Aiuola Balbo gardens; they caught up with him and stopped him on Via San Massimo.[1][2]
During the check, the man was found to be missing his right shoe and had several scrapes and small cuts on his arms. Meanwhile, the patrol car from the Dora Vanchiglia Police Station and Forensic Police personnel carried out checks at the scene of the break-in, finding among the fragments of the shattered window a right shoe identical to the one worn by the man who had been stopped, while inside the restaurant the manhole cover used to smash the window was recovered.[1][2]
Checks at Police Headquarters
The man, a 35-year-old Moroccan national without identification documents, was taken to Police Headquarters for checks, which revealed that he was already subject to a precautionary measure requiring him to reside in the municipality of Turin, with the additional requirement to remain at home between 9:30 p.m. and 5:30 a.m., as well as an obligation to report to the Judicial Police. He was arrested in the act for aggravated theft.[1][2]
