Scalenghe
Scalenghe is a municipality in the Metropolitan City of Turin. It includes the hamlets of Viotto and Pieve and borders the municipalities of Piscina and Airasca, to which, according to residents' reports, the bad smells under investigation since 2026 are said to spread [1][2].
The reports of bad smells
The first reports of a persistent stench in the hamlets of Viotto and Pieve date back to early 2026. The smells are also noticed in the neighbouring municipalities of Piscina and Airasca [1][2].
Among the possible causes under investigation is the biogas production plant run by A2A. In June 2026 a joint technical working group was set up to analyse the plant, involving the ASL (local health authority), the Metropolitan City of Turin, Arpa Piemonte (the regional environment agency), the technical bodies of the municipality of Scalenghe, and representatives of the Scalenghe and Piscina municipal administrations [1].
Monitoring and the public meeting
At the technical working group's first meeting, in late August 2026, the activation of active monitoring involving the population was proposed, through the creation of a group of "sentinels" based on a form prepared by the relevant ministry. Scalenghe's mayor, Monica Pecchio, explained that the official launch of such a system depended on the outcome of the working group's meeting on 29 October 2026 and on Arpa's report, noting that the municipality has for some time already been collecting residents' reports by email and forwarding them to Arpa, the ASL and the Metropolitan City [1].
According to the mayor, reports had continued over the previous two months, with a possible slight decrease linked to falling temperatures, while a municipal councillor living in the most affected area had continued to report the problem, especially at night [1].
On 26 October 2026, at 8.45pm, the municipal administration organised a public meeting at the Viotto oratory hall to update residents and present the findings of the Arpa and ASL reports, handed to local officials in the preceding days. The meeting was moderated by journalist Luca Nota [1][2].
