Ribordone
Ribordone is a municipality in the Metropolitan City of Turin, located in the Canavese. Part of its territory, 2,300 hectares, already lies within the Gran Paradiso National Park, Italy's oldest protected area [1].
The request to extend the park
In October 2026 the municipality of Ribordone, together with four other municipalities on the park's Piedmontese side (Groscavallo, Ingria, Pont Canavese and Sparone), began the procedure to bring a further part of its territory into the protected area. It is the first time, in the Gran Paradiso National Park's 104-year history, that municipalities have applied to join it [1][2].
Ribordone has asked to add a further 3,300 hectares to the 2,300 already within the park, which would bring 75% of the municipal territory within the protected area, the highest share among the five applicant municipalities [1][2].
The procedure has received a favourable opinion from the Higher Institute for Environmental Protection and Research (Ispra) and is awaiting discussion by the State-Regions Conference [1][2]. The five municipalities' overall project would bring more than 8,400 hectares into the park, increasing the protected area by about 12% [1][2]. The request was the subject of a hearing on 15 October 2026 before the Piedmont Regional Council's Fifth Environment, Parks and Protected Areas Committee, chaired by Sergio Bartoli, attended by Ribordone's mayor Guido Bellardo Gioli together with the leadership of the Gran Paradiso National Park and representatives of the other municipalities involved [1].
Administration
Ribordone's mayor is Guido Bellardo Gioli, who took part in the hearing before the Piedmont Region on the park extension project [1].
