Osteochondral knee reconstruction for an 18-year-old at Chieri hospital (October 2026)

In October 2026 an 18-year-old resident in the area covered by Asl To5, suffering from necrosis of the lateral femoral condyle of unknown cause, was operated on at the Maggiore hospital in Chieri using a customised osteochondral reconstruction technique. Thanks to a graft supplied by the musculoskeletal tissue bank, the surgeons were able to preserve the knee joint, avoiding the prosthesis that would otherwise have been the alternative for such a young patient. Left untreated, the necrosis could have progressed rapidly to early-onset osteoarthritis of the knee.
