Osteo-cartilaginous Reconstruction Surgery at the Ospedale Maggiore of Chieri (October 2026)

In October 2026 the team of the Orthopaedics and Traumatology Unit at the Ospedale Maggiore in Chieri operated on an eighteen-year-old resident in the area covered by ASL TO5 (local health authority), affected by necrosis of the lateral femoral condyle of the knee that could have progressed to early-onset osteoarthritis of the knee.123

To spare him from needing a prosthesis, the doctors replaced the damaged portion of bone and cartilage with an osteo-cartilaginous fragment from a donor, supplied by the Musculoskeletal Tissue Bank — one of the first procedures of this kind carried out within ASL TO5. Custom cutting guides, designed from a three-dimensional model built from CT and MRI scans of both patient and donor, allowed the surgeons to delimit the part to be removed with millimetre precision.123

The procedure, which lasted about an hour and a half, was performed by orthopaedic surgeons Antonino Cantivalli, Luigi Conforti (head of the unit), Gianmarco Bosa and Riccardo Giai Via, with anaesthetist Lorenzo Rizzi; the patient was discharged in good condition.123
