Asl To5
Asl To5 is the local health authority that includes the hospital of Moncalieri. Its Surgery department, headed by Gabriele Pozzo, is taking part in a multicentre study, with Andrea Caneparo as Principal Investigator, aimed at evaluating the effectiveness of chlorhexidine diacetate applied to surgical sutures as an alternative to triclosan, in order to prevent surgical site infections in abdominal procedures [1][2].
The study will monitor the onset of superficial and deep infections in the 30 days following surgery: the infection rate, 11% with the standard protocol, is expected to drop to 8% with the chlorhexidine-based treatment, for an estimated 28.6% reduction in post-operative infection cases [1][2]. This is the first large-scale pragmatic study designed to confirm the safety and effectiveness of the treatment in everyday clinical practice, with possible future applications for other implantable devices exposed to the risk of bacterial biofilm [1][2].
