The Surgery unit of Moncalieri hospital, part of Asl To5, launches a multicentre clinical study on the use of chlorhexidine diacetate in sutures to reduce post-operative infections in abdominal surgery. The study is led by Dr Gabriele Pozzo, with Dr Andrea Caneparo as Principal Investigator, and compares chlorhexidine with triclosan, measuring the rate of superficial and deep surgical-wound infections in the thirty days following surgery. [3]
The project's estimates point to a reduction in the infection rate from 11% to 8%, a drop of about 28.6%, and the results will help refine abdominal wound-closure protocols and assess the effectiveness of chlorhexidine against bacterial biofilm on implantable devices. [3]
