Foiled Necklace Theft in Corso Novara

The foiled necklace theft in Corso Novara is a news event that took place in the Aurora neighborhood of Turin, in which a pregnant woman reacted to having her necklace snatched by managing to restrain her attacker until the State Police arrived.[1][2]

The attack

The woman was walking along Corso Novara when she was approached from behind by a scooter carrying two people. According to the account given by officers from the Dora Vanchiglia Police Station, an eighteen-year-old seated on the scooter forcefully ripped the necklace from her neck and immediately passed it to the accomplice driving the vehicle.[1]

The victim's reaction and the arrest

Despite her pregnancy and the shock she had suffered, the woman managed to grab the eighteen-year-old by her sweatshirt, preventing her from fleeing. Patrol cars from the Dora Vanchiglia Police Station, alerted to the incident, intervened and took the young woman into custody, bringing her to police offices. The police station reported that, once the investigation was completed, the eighteen-year-old was placed under arrest.[1][2] The accomplice who had been driving the scooter and who had received the necklace managed to get away, however, and has not been traced.[1]

A widespread modus operandi

The State Police linked the incident in Corso Novara to a necklace theft that had occurred a short distance away, in the area between Corso XI Febbraio and Corso Regina Margherita, carried out using the same method: a scooter used to snatch the item and make a quick getaway. In that case, the perpetrator, a 30-year-old man, was stopped by officers after a chase and arrested for attempted necklace theft, along with additional charges of receiving stolen goods and resisting a public official.[1]

Police headquarters noted that the proceedings relating to both incidents are at the preliminary investigation stage and that the suspects are presumed innocent until a final conviction.[1]
