The Digos (Divisione Investigazioni Generali e Operazioni Speciali, General Investigations and Special Operations Division) of the Turin police headquarters (Questura) is the police unit that follows public demonstrations in the city and handles matters of public order. Digos staff operate, among other things, during marches that cross the city centre, with observation and coordination duties alongside the other forces deployed on the ground.

The car in piazza Castello (24 October 2026)

During the march of 24 October 2026 in Turin, a white car was seen moving at speed among demonstrators in piazza Castello, driving over the fountains in the middle of the pedestrian square before heading towards via Pietro Micca, where it was flanked by riot police and allowed to continue [1]. Digos sources confirmed that it was a vehicle used by the unit’s staff; according to the account given, the driver had found himself trapped between two walls of people while on public-order duty and was trying to work out which routes the march might take, since the route of the demonstration had not been communicated to the authorities in advance [1].

A demonstrator told TorinoToday that the car had accelerated towards those present before heading for the police cordon, in a square sealed off on every exit by the security forces’ roadblocks, leaving no way out for those inside it [1]. It is not clear whether the vehicle, while crossing the square, hit or injured any demonstrators [1]. The march then continued towards the Giardini Reali (Royal Gardens) and the Aurora district, with clashes that led to two arrests and criminal complaints against another twenty-five people, while the public prosecutor’s office investigates to establish individual responsibility [1].

On the matter, Alleanza Verdi-Sinistra MP Marco Grimaldi filed a parliamentary question on 26 October 2026, addressed to interior minister Matteo Piantedosi, asking whether checks had been opened into the car, its driver and the reasons for its presence among the demonstrators [1].
