Climate strike of 16 October 2026

The climate strike of 16 October 2026 is a mobilisation called in Turin by the Fridays for Future movement, together with Extinction Rebellion and the Global Sumud Flotilla network, under the slogan «Questo clima non è vita» ("This climate is no way to live"). The demonstration links the climate crisis to rising energy prices and to international conflicts tied to fossil fuels.[1][2]

The march and the sit-in

Participants are due to gather at 9:30am in front of Palazzo Nuovo, a University of Turin building. From there the march will cross the city centre, along a route still provisional at the time of the announcement: among the options put forward by the organisers are passing in front of the Rai broadcasting headquarters on via Rossini, along via Po and Piazza Castello, up to via Arsenale and the area of the Piedmont Region's skyscraper (Grattacielo). The final route depends on discussions with the Questura (police headquarters).[1][2]

In the afternoon, from 3pm, a static sit-in is planned in Piazza Palazzo di Città, in front of the town hall, intended to allow workers, students and association members who cannot attend the morning march to take part.[2]

The themes of the mobilisation

At the centre of the protest is dependence on fossil fuels and the link between traditional energy sources, rising prices and international geopolitical tensions. The organisers aim to bring together environmental and social demands, connecting the experiences of city residents, factory and farm workers, and those affected by summer heatwaves.[1][2]

A Fridays for Future activist, Carlo, highlighted the link between the summer's extreme weather events and political choices to invest in fossil fuels, noting that Italy maintains a strong dependence on these sources and that this exposes the country to international crises and swings in energy prices. The same activist recalled the fines, running into thousands of euros, imposed under Article 18 at previous demonstrations.[1]

The demonstration will also feature, for the first time in Turin, the «sudario per la pace» ("shroud for peace"), a symbol chosen by the collectives to link climate justice to calls for a ceasefire and international solidarity in ongoing conflicts.[2]

Context

Turin's mobilisation is part of a wider day of strikes, with initiatives planned in various European cities, including on days other than Turin's.[1]
