Brandizzo

Brandizzo is a municipality in the Turin metropolitan area. On the night of 30 August 2023, a train struck and killed five workers carrying out maintenance work on the railway line: Kevin Laganà (22), Michael Zanera (34), Giuseppe Sorvillo (43), Giuseppe Aversa (49) and Giuseppe Saverio Lombardo (52).3 The trial over the disaster opened on 30 September 2026 with a preliminary hearing at the Palazzo di Giustizia in Ivrea, where the public prosecutor's office requested that the companies Rfi, Sigifer and Clf, along with 19 other individuals, be committed to trial; ten organisations and about forty people, including the Municipality of Brandizzo, joined the proceedings as civil parties.3

On the eve of the trial's opening, on 24 September 2026, Cgil Piemonte, Cgil Torino, Filt Cgil and Fillea Cgil organised an event titled «Il lavoro chiede giustizia» («Work demands justice») in Piazza Carlo Tempia in Brandizzo, under the patronage of the municipality, marking the third anniversary of the disaster; it opened with remarks from the mayor of Brandizzo, Monica Durante, and the general secretary of Cgil Torino, Federico Bellono.2 The general secretary of Cgil Piemonte, Giorgio Airaudo, said: «We have not forgotten and we are not settling in. We do not think that the status quo should be normal. We fear it could happen again, and we will not stay silent».12
