Boca
Boca is a municipality in the Province of Novara, in Alto Piemonte, which gives its name to Boca wine, a denominazione di origine controllata (DOC) produced in the Novara area. The municipality is home to the Le Piane winery, described as a reference point for the revival and promotion of winemaking in Alto Piemonte [1].
The Le Piane winery
In the Slow Wine Guide 2027, edited by Slow Food Editore and presented on 30 October 2026, the Le Piane winery in Boca is the only winemaking business in the Novara area to receive the Chiocciola ("Snail"), the guide's highest award for businesses defined as "good, clean and fair" [1]. The same winery also received the Top Wine award, given to individual labels, for its wine La Maggiorina 2023 [1].
Boca DOC wine
Among the wines awarded Top Wine in the same edition of the guide is also Boca Il Rosso delle Donne 2022, produced by the Castello Conti winery of Maggiora: the label bears the name of the Boca designation, tied to the municipality's territory [1]. Two other Novara-area wines named Top Wine in the same edition are Colline Novaresi Bianco Luce del Buonumore 2023 from the Barbaglia winery of Cavallirio and Gattinara 2023 from the Bianchi winery of Sizzano [1].
The Slow Wine Guide 2027
The Slow Wine Guide 2027 by Slow Food Editore evaluates Italian wine producers according to criteria of sensory quality, environmental sustainability and ties to the territory [1]. Among the guide's initiatives is a campaign to reduce the sector's environmental footprint, monitoring the weight of glass bottles towards a threshold of 450 grams, in order to cut emissions linked to transport [1].
