Amiat Gruppo Iren

Amiat Gruppo Iren is the company, part of the Iren group, responsible for waste collection and urban sanitation in the city of Turin; its chair is Paola Bragantini [1][2][3].

Separate waste collection in Turin

According to the company, separate collection of paper was the first form of separate waste collection introduced in Turin and is today a practice well established among citizens [1][2][3]. In 2025 separate collection reached all 34 districts of the city, the last of which was the city centre, with a separate collection rate of 58% and over 40,000 tonnes of paper and cardboard collected in the city during the year [1][2].

The Risma plant in Collegno

In spring 2026 Risma, the first Italian plant for paper recovery, was inaugurated in Collegno, equipped with a separation line dedicated to beverage cartons with a separation quality of over 90% [1][3]. In the first year of operation of the line, Amiat delivered about 400 tonnes of beverage cartons to the Comieco consortium [1][3].

The «Nella cartaaaaa? Sì» campaign

On 21 September 2026 Amiat Gruppo Iren took part, together with Comieco and under the patronage of the City of Turin, in the launch of the communication campaign «Nella cartaaaaa? Sì», running for about a month across billboards, radio, television, press and social media, to raise citizens' awareness that beverage cartons - made up of 75% paper, 20% polyethylene and 5% aluminium - should be disposed of in paper collection [1][2][3]. The aim of the campaign, according to Comieco's general director Roberto Di Molfetta, is to double within 18 months the volumes of cartons collected through the Risma plant [1][3]. For the City of Turin's Councillor for the Environment Chiara Foglietta, the initiative is part of work carried out « not only on quantity of collection but above all on quality » [1][2].

Amiat's chair Paola Bragantini stated that the company's goal is to increase the level of separate collection through an « increasingly conscious » collection, indicating the intention to increase the number of the city's recycling centres [1]. Bragantini also highlighted the social sustainability component of the work on paper, carried out by the Cooperativa Arcobaleno, which also employs workers coming from « difficult backgrounds » [1].
