Abandonment of a cattle carcass in Virle Piemonte
Date of the event:
In early May 2026 a bag containing the carcass of a cow, weighing around 50 kilograms and in an advanced state of decomposition, was abandoned on the road between via Vigone and via Carlo Alberto in Virle Piemonte, close to the municipal playground used by children and families.[1][2]
The discovery
A patrol of the joint municipal police service of Carignano, Piobesi Torinese and Virle Piemonte noticed the suspicious bag during a routine patrol. The Veterinary Service of the ASL TO3 (local health authority) attended the scene, carried out the hygiene and health inspections and arranged the procedures for recovering and disposing of the animal's remains.[1][2]
The investigation
Officers reviewed footage from the municipal video surveillance system and identified a car that had passed through the area on the morning of 6 May 2026. Checking the number plate against police databases led them to the vehicle's owner, a 21-year-old resident of Collegno who, at the time, was under house arrest in connection with other judicial proceedings. The car was later traced and seized in Liguria.[1][2]
Officers went to the young man's home and asked him to explain the vehicle's use on the day of the abandonment. The 21-year-old claimed that at that time the car had been in the hands of another person, but he refused to provide any information that could identify them. Considering these statements evasive, the municipal police reported him to the public prosecutor's office (Procura della Repubblica) at liberty for aiding and abetting (favoreggiamento personale) under article 378 of the criminal code.[1][2]
Status of the proceedings
The investigation is continuing to identify who actually abandoned the carcass and to establish where it came from, as well as any further responsibilities.[1][2]
