2026 Feast of the Chapel of the Assumption at Castello di Castellamonte
The 2026 Feast of the Chapel of the Assumption is the event through which, on Saturday 26 September 2026, the Chapel of the Assumption inside the Castello di Castellamonte, in Canavese, reopened its doors to the public for the second consecutive year. The opening follows the chapel's restoration, funded with PNRR funds, and fulfills a commitment made by the castle's ownership: to celebrate a revitalized feast of the Assumption every year by opening the historic complex to visitors [1].
The 2026 event
From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday 26 September, the public was able to access the castle complex, with the opportunity to visit both the small chapel and the Torre Rossa. Holy Mass was celebrated at 11:30 a.m. [1]. The previous year, in June 2025, the chapel hosted its first liturgy in a hundred years, presided over by the Bishop of Ivrea, Monsignor Daniele Salera [1].
History of the chapel
The Chapel of the Castello di Castellamonte was for a long time an important place of worship for the area: during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries the bishops of Ivrea would come here to celebrate Mass on special occasions, and from here the archpriests of Castellamonte would customarily impart their blessing upon the town [1].
Identity and artistic value
The chapel overlooks the town and is a visible focal point when entering Castellamonte from Rivarolo, Cuorgnè or Ivrea, an element that reinforces its identity value in addition to its religious and spiritual significance [1]. The restoration made it possible to recover the grand painted altar, considered a unique example of "ephemeral architecture" in Canavese, designed by the architect in the service of the House of Savoy, Amedeo di Castellamonte (1613-1683), who at the time owned the castle and also oversaw the chapel's architectural renovation; the chapel's existence is documented from the late fifteenth century [1].
