A round-up of the topics Turinese are talking about most these days, in the squares, on campus, in the stands and online: what happened, and where to read more.

1. The youth protest: marches and the occupied Einaudi Campus

On Saturday 24 October a march that set off from piazza Castello against rearmament, data centres and rising petrol prices clashed twice with the police: first at the entrance to via Po, pushed back by a baton charge, then in the evening at ponte Mosca, with flares and bottles thrown and tear gas used in response. ANSA named Turin among the cities with the highest tension on a day of protests across Italy.[1]

Two days later, on the evening of 26 October, students occupied the Luigi Einaudi Campus of the University: they are demanding that money be shifted from military spending to schools, research and healthcare, affordable housing and student halls, and an end to the university's agreements with the defence sector. The occupation is expected to last at least until the national general strike on Friday 30 October.[2] Mayor Stefano Lo Russo weighed in, calling on the government for a "Marshall Plan" for young people and a meeting between the prime minister and the mayors of the big cities.[3]

2. The Juventus crisis and the Conte question

After the 0-3 home defeat to Lazio and the 2-2 draw with Rennes in the Europa League, many Juventus fans are criticising Luciano Spalletti's decisions on social media and calling for Antonio Conte's return; the club has so far confirmed the coach.[5] Part of the sports commentary, however, shifts the blame onto the club's management and chief executive Giovanni Carnevali, over a summer transfer window judged costly and unbalanced.[4]

3. Farmers outside the Regional Council

On Tuesday 27 October about 4,000 farmers from across Piedmont demonstrated with Coldiretti outside Palazzo Lascaris, seat of the Regional Council, presenting ten requests: from the price of agricultural diesel to the power of large retail chains, from drought to wildlife damage. The Region confirmed about €8 million against the rise in diesel prices.[6] Details in the entry on the rally.
