Valle Varaita is a Piedmontese valley located in the Province of Cuneo. In its upper section it is crossed by provincial road SP251, which climbs to Colle dell'Agnello, an international pass of the Cottian Alps on the border with France. [1][2]

Colle dell'Agnello

Colle dell'Agnello links upper Valle Varaita with French territory in the department of Hautes-Alpes. Provincial road SP251, which leads to it, is managed by the Province of Cuneo and reaches the pass and the state border at kilometre 14.010, after crossing the stretch that starts at the old customs post (Dogana), at kilometre 4.700. [1][2] Together with Colle della Lombarda, in Valle Stura, it is one of the two international passes managed by the Province of Cuneo. [1][2]

Winter closure

On 2 November 2026, from noon, the Province of Cuneo ordered the seasonal closure to traffic of provincial road SP251 over Colle dell'Agnello, in the section between the old customs post and the border crossing. The measure was adopted in agreement with the authorities of the Département des Hautes-Alpes, as part of a protocol for the cross-border management of the road. [2] On the same day the winter closure of Colle della Lombarda, in Valle Stura, also came into effect, temporarily leaving the Province of Cuneo without any usable international road crossing into France. [1][2] The road is expected to reopen the following spring, depending on weather conditions and snow accumulation recorded during the winter. [1][2]
