Turin surpasses 1.28 million meals saved with Too Good To Go
On 25 September 2026, on the occasion of the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste, the platform Too Good To Go released a report on the fight against food waste in Turin. Since 2019, more than 1.28 million meals that would otherwise have been thrown away have been recovered in the city [1][2].
Turin's figures
More than 650 businesses in Turin have joined the service, ranging from neighbourhood shops to large restaurant chains and major retailers [1][2]. Over the past year, the number of meals saved in the city rose by 11% compared with the previous year [1][2]. To put the overall figure into perspective, Too Good To Go compared the number of meals recovered since 2019 to the capacity of the Stadio Olimpico Grande Torino, estimating that it would be enough to fill it almost 45 times over [1][2].
Mirco Cerisola, Country Director for Italy at Too Good To Go, commented: «Every meal saved is a meal that does not become waste. The more than 1,280,000 meals saved in Turin through Too Good To Go since 2019 represent more than just a number: they are 1,280,000 occasions on which citizens and businesses have made a concrete choice to give still-good food a second chance» [1].
The national context
According to figures cited by Too Good To Go, 8,127,009 tonnes of food are wasted in Italy every year, equivalent to more than 257 kilograms per second and around 15.4 tonnes per minute [1][2]. According to WWF, food waste is globally associated with roughly 10% of greenhouse gas emissions generated by human activity [1][2]. The latest Policy Brief from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) lists tackling food loss and waste among the five priority areas for accelerating climate action, pointing among its solutions to the development of more circular food systems through technological tools that connect retail surplus with consumers [1][2].
The campaign in train stations
To mark the day, Too Good To Go launched an awareness campaign with Grandi Stazioni Retail involving 14 railway stations in the Italian network, aimed at commuters and travellers to raise awareness about the possibility of recovering still-edible food at participating outlets. According to figures released by the company, over the past year outlets in major Italian stations that have joined the platform have made it possible to save more than 45,000 meals, avoiding the emission of more than 120,000 kilograms of CO2 equivalent [2].
