Turin at the Urban 20 Mayors Summit 2026

Turin's participation in the Urban 20 Mayors Summit 2026 refers to the speech by Mayor Stefano Lo Russo at the summit bringing together mayors and representatives of the leading cities of the G20 countries, held in New York on 19 and 20 September 2026. The Urban 20 is the platform promoted by cities that feeds into the G20 process, convened on an ongoing basis by C40 Cities and United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG); the 2026 edition is co-chaired by New York City and Los Angeles. The event matters for Turin because it marks the city's involvement in an international dialogue among more than thirty urban administrations, taking place alongside the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly.[1][3]

The invitation and Turin's participation

Turin's participation in the Summit stems from an invitation by New York City Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani, as part of the Urban 20 programme. The invitation builds on work carried out by the City of Turin in previous years, including with the Mayors Migration Council, on inclusion and regular labour mobility.[1][3] The Summit brings together mayors and representatives from more than thirty cities, including Amsterdam, Atlanta, Barcelona, Boston, Chicago, Copenhagen, Denver, Freetown, Helsinki, Jakarta, Los Angeles, Mexico City, Milan, Montréal, Paris, Rome, Rotterdam and Santiago.[1][3]

Themes of the summit

The Summit is devoted to the major challenges facing urban areas: housing affordability, climate action and resilience, migration, human mobility and the building of inclusive communities. The Urban 20 process also leads to a joint Communiqué, through which cities put forward proposals and priorities to be submitted to G20 governments.[1][3]

Lo Russo's speech

On Sunday 20 September, Mayor Stefano Lo Russo speaks at the session dedicated to "Migration, Belonging & the Future of Cities", focused on the policies through which cities address human mobility, social and labour inclusion, and the building of cohesive communities. Taking part in the discussion, among others, are the mayors of Denver, Freetown and Milan — Mike Johnston, Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr and Giuseppe Sala respectively — together with representatives of the New York and Chicago administrations and the Executive Director of the Mayors Migration Council, Vittoria Zanuso.[1][3] Turin's contribution focuses in particular on its experience with labour mobility corridors and on cities' capacity to build tools that combine reception, legality, training, employment and inclusion.[1][3]

Statements

Mayor Lo Russo states: "Being invited to bring Turin's experience into a dialogue among some of the world's leading cities is a recognition of the work built over these years by our territory together with institutions, businesses, social organisations and international partners. Migration is one of the great issues of our time and calls for seriousness, governing capacity and pragmatism. Turin has a long history of reception and integration and has always been able to adapt its tools to social change."[1][3] On his meeting with the mayor of New York, Lo Russo says: "It was a pleasure to meet Mayor Mamdani, and to have a dialogue with him on the future of our cities. Turin and New York are cities with different histories, sizes and characteristics, and precisely for this reason the dialogue between our communities can be a valuable opportunity."[2]
