Tram vibrations in via Pietro Micca, Turin (October 2026)

On via Pietro Micca, in central Turin, residents report windows shaking and chandeliers swinging whenever trams pass, with vibrations felt for up to nineteen seconds after each tram goes by. The problem originates from the crossing of tram tracks between via Pietro Micca and via XX Settembre and prompted the Fratelli d'Italia council group, in an urgent question signed by councillor Grazia Poggio Sartori, to raise the matter formally.1

Arpa Piemonte, the Piedmont regional environmental protection agency, certified clear breaches of the legal vibration limits, both by day (10.4 millimetres per second squared against a 7.2 limit) and by night (9.9 mm/s² against the permitted 3.6).1

In response, Gruppo Torinese Trasporti (GTT, Turin's public transport operator) stepped up checks on drivers' compliance with speed limits and set a 15 km/h limit for trams on the affected stretch and at the crossing itself.1

What was meant to be straightforward extraordinary maintenance turned, in discussions between the Transport department led by councillor Chiara Foglietta, GTT and the Soprintendenza (heritage authority), into a deep redevelopment project: the Soprintendenza requested a design for completely redoing via Pietro Micca that would restore the original lose paving stones along the whole street. The project, being worked out with the company Infra. To, provides for rebuilding the tram track bed and the road surface, including work on the foundations and on acoustic and anti-vibration insulation for the buildings.1
