The Saluzzo Carnival 2027 takes place from 24 January to 7 February in Saluzzo, in the Province of Cuneo. For the third year running, the role of Ciaferlin is given to Beppe Roatta, who accompanies the Castellana of the City of Saluzzo [1][2].

The Ciaferlin mask

The Ciaferlin is the traditional mask of the Saluzzo Carnival: it represents a peasant from the Saluzzo area named Chiaffredo, who comes into the city from the countryside. He is a witty, festive, common character who likes to mock those in power, recognisable by his traditional umbrella and cavagna, a straw basket [1][2]. The Ciaferlin is accompanied by the noble Castellana, a figure present since 1952, and, since 1963, by the ciaferlinòt and the damigelle, young attendants [1][2]. The mask belongs to the tradition of historic Piedmontese masks and is often playfully compared to the figure of Gianduja [1][2].

Beppe Roatta, described as fun-loving and festive, has for two years been working with the Amleto Bertoni Foundation on telling the story of the city's tradition and historical memory, both old and recent [1][2].

Programme

The main dates of the Saluzzo Carnival 2027 are: Sunday 24 January at 10am, the investiture of the Castellana; Sunday 31 January at 2pm, the carnival of the oratories of the Diocese of Saluzzo and the masks; Sunday 7 February at 2pm, the parade of papier-mâché floats and masks [1][2].

Organisation

The carnival is part of the movement coordinated by the Associazione Cricca del carlevè, which every year brings together the masks of the Saluzzo area, from the plain to the valleys [1][2].
