SMAT
SMAT – Società Metropolitana Acque Torino is the public joint-stock company that manages the integrated water service in the Turin area: collection and distribution of drinking water, sewerage and water treatment [1]. It was founded as the sole water operator for the Turin basin: in July 1999 the Turin City Council approved its articles of association, at the end of a four-year process, with the municipal Azienda Acquedotto, the Po Sangone utility and about twenty municipalities among the founding members; the stated goal was to extend its management to all 306 municipalities in the basin [2].
That goal was achieved in April 2025, when SMAT took over the water branch of Società Pinerolese Industriale and became the sole operator for the entire ATO3 Torinese area, serving 293 municipalities and 2,187,538 inhabitants [3]. Its headquarters are in Turin, at corso XI Febbraio 14; the City of Turin is among its shareholders and appoints several members of the board of directors [4]. The company also manages the Punti Acqua network across the territory, 229 public water dispensers that supplied over 43 million litres in 2025 [5].
The website smatorino.it is the channel through which service users keep track of their supply: the online portal allows them to check consumption, contracts and bills, report self-read meter readings and choose payment methods, and the site provides information on the installation of digital meters [1]. In the Torino Top 100 ranking for September 2026, the site is among the 50,000 most visited sites in Italy according to Google's Chrome UX Report.
