Poirino
Poirino is a comune in the metropolitan city of Turin, in the Torinese area. The town featured in national news in 2026 in connection with the case of Muriel Oddenino, a researcher born there who died while diving in the Maldives.[1][2]
The divers' case in the Maldives
On 14 May 2026 five Italian divers, including Muriel Oddenino, died during a dive in a submerged cave in the Vaavu atoll, in the Maldives. Also killed were professor Monica Montefalcone, her daughter Giorgia Sommacal, recent graduate Federico Gualtieri, and the boat's captain, Gianluca Benedetti.[1][2]
The autopsy, ordered by the Busto Arsizio prosecutor's office as part of the manslaughter investigation later transferred to the Rome prosecutor's office, established that all members of the group died of anoxia after their tanks ran out of oxygen at a depth of about 60 metres. Toxicology tests found no anomalies, and the autopsies showed no injuries consistent with a shark attack or a traumatic accident. The findings will now be cross-checked with an analysis of the recovered equipment, including tanks, cameras and dive computers, to clarify how the group came to exceed the time allowed by their air supply.[1][2]
Muriel Oddenino was 30 years old and was born in Poirino, in the province of Turin, although she had long lived in the Savona area, between Noli and Bergeggi. She was the daughter of a general practitioner, a profession also practised by her grandfather and by one of her brothers, Tomas, a doctor in Alassio. She had studied marine biology at the University of Genoa, after first studying in Bari.[2]
