Nuvola Lavazza
The Nuvola Lavazza is the headquarters of Lavazza in the Aurora district of Turin: a 30,000-square-metre complex between Via Bologna, Largo Brescia, Corso Palermo and Via Ancona, designed by Cino Zucchi while preserving the existing industrial architecture.[1]
The project
Zucchi won an invited competition; the design and construction took eight years, with an investment of 120 million euros.[2][3] The headquarters was inaugurated on 12 April 2018 and opened to the public on 14 April, while the company's website gives 8 June 2018.[2][3][1] The historic building retains its "cathedral" façade on Via Bologna, and the complex has obtained LEED Platinum certification.[2]
The spaces
The complex includes the Lavazza Museum, designed with Ralph Appelbaum and divided into five areas, the 1,400-square-metre event space "La Centrale", a green piazza open to the city, a restaurant and the company's executive offices.[1][2]
The archaeological area
During excavations in 2014, at the corner of Via Ancona and Corso Palermo, the remains of an early Christian church from the 4th-5th century emerged over about 1,600 square metres, with numerous tombs, probably linked to the cult of Saint Secondus; the project was modified to preserve it, and a large glass wall makes it visible.[4] The archaeological area was inaugurated in September 2018 together with the Superintendency and the City.[4]
