National Institute for Nuclear Physics
The National Institute for Nuclear Physics (Infn) is the Italian research institute for nuclear, subnuclear and astroparticle physics. On 6 October 2026 its evaluation committee was meeting in Turin when the Belgian physicist Francis Halzen, who was present at the meeting, received a phone call with the news that he had won the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physics for the decisive contribution of the IceCube neutrino observatory. A guest of the University of Turin, Halzen explained that neutrino astronomy is still in its early stages and described the relief he felt at receiving the prize, after having devoted about 35 years to developing neutrino experiments.
