Francis Halzen is a Belgian physicist, among the main driving forces behind the IceCube neutrino observatory. On 6 October 2026 he received a phone call in Turin, where he was attending a meeting of the evaluation committee of the Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare, with the news that he had won the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physics for IceCube's decisive contribution. Halzen, a Belgian-American physicist at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, held his first press conference as a Nobel laureate in the Rectorate Hall of the University of Turin; the official citation of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences honoured him «for his fundamental contribution to the IceCube Neutrino Observatory and for the discovery of high-energy neutrinos of astrophysical origin».
