Lusernetta

Lusernetta is a municipality in the Metropolitan City of Turin, located in Val Pellice, with just over 500 inhabitants.[2]

Administration

Since 2014 the mayor of Lusernetta had been Alex Maurino, a municipal police officer in Bagnolo Piemonte by profession, elected for three consecutive terms; in June 2024 he was reconfirmed with 97.95% of the vote.[2][1][3]

Maurino died during the night between 26 and 27 September 2026, at the age of 48, after a cancer illness that had led to his admission to the Candiolo Cancer Institute; he would have turned 49 on 1 October.[1][2][3]

Community life

In the mayor's final weeks of life, the community gathered for prayer vigils, which began on 11 September 2026 and were then repeated every Friday and Monday.[1]

Among the initiatives linked to his term in office were the creation of an Alzheimer's café in Val Pellice, carried out together with the mayor of Torre Pellice Maurizia Allisio as part of a project for a dementia-friendly community, the inauguration in June 2026 of the town's new square, behind the church, named after Domenico Bricco, the local Alpini group's first leader, and the establishment of a new Pro Loco.[2][1][3]

Reactions to the mayor's death

News of Maurino's death prompted condolences from local officials, including the mayor of Torre Pellice Maurizia Allisio and the deputy mayor of the Metropolitan City of Turin Jacopo Suppo, who expressed the institution's closeness to the family and the town.[2][3]
